Recently, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers released 2017 production and sales figures for the automotive industry: total vehicle output and sales reached 29.0154 million units and 28.8789 million units, up 3.19% and 3.04% year on year, respectively. These growth rates represented a deceleration of 11.27 and 10.61 percentage points compared with the same period last year. Among them, commercial vehicle production and sales stood at 4.2087 million and 4.1606 million units, up 13.81% and 13.95% year on year.

In December 2017, heavy‑truck production and sales stood at 92,900 units and 66,300 units, down 5.22% and 21.82% month over month, and 5.46% and 12.02% year over year. This marked the second consecutive monthly decline since the first drop in November; however, thanks to the substantial base established over the first ten months, the overall growth trend for 2017 remains firmly intact. For the full year 2017, heavy‑truck production and sales reached 1.1497 million units and 1.1169 million units, up 55.07% and 52.38% year over year. By all accounts, this performance has left an indelible mark on the history of China’s heavy‑truck industry.

From the perspective of the industry competitive landscape, FAW Jiefang recorded cumulative sales of 241,000 heavy-duty trucks from January to December, firmly holding the top spot with a year-on-year growth of 62.7%. Overall, in 2017, the industry leader delivered near‑perfect performance.

In second place, Dongfeng has accumulated sales of 216,000 heavy-duty trucks, up 51.5% year over year. Over the past two months, Dongfeng has delivered a standout performance, topping the monthly sales rankings.

In third place, China National Heavy Duty Truck Group has recorded cumulative heavy-truck sales of 190,000 units this year, up 54.9% year on year. CNHTC’s position in the construction‑vehicle segment, particularly in concrete mixers, remains unshakable.

In fourth place, Shaanxi Automobile Group has accumulated sales of 173,000 units, up 60.2% year over year. Foton continues to hold fifth position in the heavy-truck sector, with cumulative sales of 114,000 heavy trucks so far this year—a 45.6% increase compared with the same period last year. Based on these results, the top five rankings in the heavy-truck industry remain unchanged from 2016.

In sixth place, JAC Motors sold 51,000 heavy trucks for the full year, up 19.2% year over year; in seventh, SAIC Hongyan recorded sales of 40,000 units, a 157.9% increase; in eighth, Dayun Automobile sold 30,000 units, with growth of 26%; Hualing Motors ranked ninth with 19,000 units, up 28.7%; and in tenth, Beiben Heavy-Duty Trucks posted sales of 14,000 units, a 39.3% year-over-year rise. There were some shifts among the sixth‑to‑tenth positions: in 2017, Hongyan surged to seventh place, boasting the industry’s fastest growth rate.

With a remarkable 1.1169 million units sold, the industry has reached an all-time high, prompting widespread celebration across the heavy-truck sector. As 2018 ushers in a new chapter—its prospects uncertain and its journey long—we, as members of this industry, must remain true to our original aspirations and forge ahead with unwavering determination.
