Interpretation of the Splash-Resistant System in GB 7258
On September 29, 2017, the promulgation of GB 7258-2017 had a significant impact on the truck industry. GB 7258 is an essential component of China’s national safety technical standards for motor vehicles; it serves as the fundamental technical standard for registration and inspection, in-service vehicle inspections, vehicle verification, and other aspects of motor vehicle operational safety management and accident‑vehicle assessment. It also constitutes one of the key technical bases for mandatory type‑approval testing of new vehicles, factory‑outgoing inspections of new vehicles, and inspections of imported motor vehicles.
Like GB 1589‑2016, the latest edition of GB 7258‑2017 is equally stringent. The more rigorous safety standards are driving manufacturers to elevate their technological capabilities.
Article 11.10.1 of GB 7258 stipulates that trucks with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 7,500 kg, as well as special-purpose vehicles converted from truck chassis, must be equipped with a splash‑guard system, and all wheels of other motor vehicles must be fitted with mudguards. This means that our existing products—dump trucks, concrete mixers, and semi‑trailers—must all be retrofitted with splash‑guard systems. So, what exactly is a splash‑guard system? What technical requirements does it impose? And how should we design and manufacture these systems to comply with the standard?
Next, let’s take a look at the splash‑proof system:
Drivers who have traveled on highways in rainy weather have likely noticed that when a truck speeds ahead, numerous water droplets and mist are kicked up around its tires, reducing visibility for following vehicles and posing a significant safety hazard. The splash‑suppression system mandated by the standard addresses this issue by employing energy‑absorbing components in the mudguards and a water‑air separation device to minimize the formation of such spray.
The performance requirements and test methods for splash‑suppression systems on motor vehicles and trailers (GB 34659‑2017) provide a detailed description of such systems. A splash‑suppression system comprises mudguards equipped with splash‑suppression devices—including air/water separation devices and energy‑absorbing devices—along with external shields and splash curtains. Installing a single type of splash‑suppression device is sufficient to meet the standard’s requirements; it is not necessary to install both types.
